The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
